Shinshu is the traditional name for Nagano Prefecture. Located in central Honshu—the primary island of Japan—Shinshu flourished in ancient times as a cultural crossroads between Eastern and Western Japan.

Mini Lesson

Asking a station worker what way of transportation you should use to go to a place you desire.

マイク：すみません。Aへは　どう　行(い)ったらいいですか。
Mike:     Excuse me. How do I go to A?

　　　　　　　　
駅員(えきいん)：B ラインで　C まで行(い)って、Cで　Dラインに　乗(の)り換　　(か)えてください。

Station worker:  Take the B Line to C, then transfer to the D Line.
マイク：ここから Aまで、何分(なんぷん)くらい　かかりますか。
           About how many minutes does it take to get to A from here?

駅員(えきいん) : そうですね。２０分(にじゅっぷん)ぐらい　ですね。
                        Well, about 20 minutes.

マイク：ありがとうございました。

　Asking what is recommended at a soba (buckwheat noodle) restaurant.

Ａ：すみません。メニュー　おねがいします。
      Excuse me. Could we have a menu?
Ｂ：はい。どうぞ。
      Yes, here you are.
Ａ：Ｃちゃん、何(なに)を　食(た)べる？
　　C-chan, what are you going to eat?
Ｃ：そうねえ、何(なに)が　いいかなあ。私(わたし)は　てんぷらそばに　するわ。
      Well, I wonder what is good. I'm going to have the Tempura-soba.
Ａ：すみません。おすすめは　何(なん)ですか。
      Excuse me, what do you recommend?
Ｂ：さんさい、つきみ、きつね、ぜんぶ　おいしいですよ。
     This shop's sansai, tsumimi, and kitsune soba (and all their other sobas ) are 　  delicious.
Ａ：「つきみ」って　なんですか。
       What is "tsukimi"?
Ｂ：「つきみ」と　いうのは、生(なま)たまごの　そばです。
      Tsukimi is soba noodles with raw egg.
Ａ：じゃあ、ぼくは　つきみにします。それから　ビールも　おねがいします。
      Then, I'll have tsukimi and a beer.
Ｂ：Ｃちゃんも　ビールを　飲(の)む？
       C-chan, are you ging to drink beer?
Ｃ：ううん、私(わたし)は　飲(の)まないわ。
      No, I don't drink.
Ａ：じゃあ、てんぷらそばを　１つ(ひとつ) と　つきみそばを　１つ(ひとつ)と　ビール   を１本(いっぽん)　おねがいします。
     Well, one tempura-soba, one tsukimi-soba and one bottle of beer please.
